Ingredients
- 2 c. flour
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 stick butter, frozen
- 1/2 c. buttermilk, cold
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. vanilla (optional)
- coarse sugar for topping
Directions
- whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt
- grate frozen butter on box grater
- toss butter into flour and work with hands until coarse crumbs
- add mix-ins if using
- whisk buttermilk, egg, and vanilla separately
- pour wet into dry and stir until shaggy
- knead briefly until dough comes together
- pat into 1-inch thick disk
- cut into 8 wedges
- freeze 15 minutes
- brush with buttermilk and sprinkle coarse sugar
- bake 20 minutes until golden
Notes
for flakier scones, fold dough in thirds twice before shaping
